The Role of the Governing Body

As governors at Woodlands School we work with the headteacher, Mrs Woods, to ensure that Woodlands delivers a good quality education.  The headteacher is responsible for day-to-day management;  the governors set the aims and policies for the school.

Governors have three main roles:

  • To provide strategic direction for the school
  • To act as a critical friend to the headteacher
  • To ensure accountability

We also carry out a number of other important duties, which include:

  • Determining how the school's budget is spent
  • Appointing the headteacher and deputy head
  • Forming policy on the school's curriculum and collective worship
  • Setting policies and standards for pupils' behaviour and discipline
  • Making sure the school environment is welcoming and safe
  • Setting and monitoring implementation of the school's aims and policies

The full GB meets at least termly and sometimes every half-term.  It appoints committees which are able to look at issues in more detail; at present we have two committees, Finance and Premises and Curriculum and Personnel.

Under the current Instrument of Government, Woodlands Governing Body consists of 18 governors: six elected parent governors, four appointed LEA governors, four staff governors and four co-opted community governors.  Governors are appointed or elected for a four year term. The GB may also appoint additional associate governors who are not full members but may attend GB meetings and sit on committees.
